Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed in 51 adult immunocompromised patients (30 acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS] and 21 non-AIDS) as part of an extensive diagnostic evaluation for diffuse pulmonary infiltrates.
